FAQ

Common questions, straight answers

How much do custom stainless steel countertops cost compared to quartz or granite?

Custom stainless steel countertops fabricated and installed in Southern California typically run $80–$225 per square foot, depending on gauge, finish, cutouts, and complexity. Quartz countertops run $105–$185 per square foot installed; granite runs $95–$225. Stainless steel is competitively priced at the mid-to-upper range — and unlike stone, there are no seams on a custom-fabricated piece, no sealing required, and no risk of chipping.

How does stainless steel compare to quartz for kitchen countertops?

Stainless steel and quartz are both non-porous and require no sealing — a major advantage over granite and marble. Stainless steel is more heat-resistant (you can set a hot pan directly on it), is fully food-safe, and can be fabricated with integrated sinks and drainboards in one seamless piece. Quartz offers more color variety and hides scratches better. For homeowners who cook seriously, stainless steel is the more functional surface; for those who prioritize aesthetics and minimal maintenance, quartz is the more forgiving choice.

What gauge stainless steel is best for kitchen countertops?

For residential kitchen countertops, 16-gauge stainless steel is the professional standard — thick enough to resist dents and warping under daily use. 18-gauge is lighter and lower cost but dents more easily. Iron Sight typically recommends 16-gauge 304-grade stainless for all residential installations.

Will stainless steel countertops scratch or dent?

Stainless steel will show fine surface scratches over time, especially in polished finishes. This is normal and not structural — scratches blend into the brushed #4 finish with ordinary use and can be buffed out. We recommend 16-gauge 304-grade steel for residential countertops: it is thick enough to resist denting under daily household use. Lighter 18-gauge steel will dent more easily and is better suited to lighter-duty applications.

Does stainless steel rust in a kitchen environment?

304-grade stainless steel — the standard we use for all residential countertops — contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel, which creates a self-healing oxide layer that resists rust and corrosion in normal kitchen conditions. It will not rust from water, acidic foods, or steam. For outdoor kitchens or coastal installations within 5 miles of salt air, we recommend 316-grade stainless, which adds molybdenum for superior corrosion resistance.

How do I clean and maintain stainless steel countertops?

Stainless steel countertops require no sealing, waxing, or special chemicals. For daily cleaning, wipe with a damp cloth or mild dish soap and dry — that is the entire routine. For deeper cleaning, Bar Keepers Friend (powdered) removes discoloration and restores the surface in under two minutes. Always wipe in the direction of the grain (parallel to the brushed lines) to avoid cross-grain scratches. Avoid steel wool or chlorine bleach, which can damage the surface finish.

How do stainless steel countertops affect home resale value?

Kitchen countertop upgrades consistently deliver 60–80% return on investment at resale, and custom stainless steel is increasingly associated with chef-grade, high-end kitchens — a strong selling point to serious buyers. Stainless steel is unlikely to deter buyers the way a polarizing color or pattern might, and its durability means it will look good for decades without replacement. For maximum resale impact, pair it with neutral cabinetry and standard appliance finishes.

How long does custom stainless steel fabrication take in Santa Clarita?

Lead time for custom stainless steel countertops, islands, and range hoods is typically 2 to 4 weeks from approved design to installation, depending on complexity. Commercial kitchen projects run 4 to 6 weeks. Rush orders may be available — contact us for scheduling.

Can a stainless steel countertop be made with an integrated sink?

Yes — an integrated undermount or drop-in sink is one of the most popular options we fabricate. The sink and countertop are formed from a single sheet of steel: there are no caulk lines, no seam between the basin and the top, and no joint where food debris and bacteria can collect. This is standard in commercial kitchens for sanitation reasons, and it works the same way in a residential kitchen. We can also add integral drainboards sloped toward the basin.
